'Drive for show, but putt for dough' is the phrase we've all seen and learned from watching professional golfers in every tournament and championship either live or on TV.

‘Drive for show, but putt for dough’ is the phrase we’ve all seen and learned from watching professional golfers in every tournament and championship either live or on TV.

The masters of golf can drive a ball from here to eternity, but it all boils down to how many strikes of the ball it takes to put the ball in the hole. The long accurate drives don’t amount to anything if you’re unable to putt the ball accurately.

The choice of putter is very important, but knowing how to use that putter consistently, is even more important. For example, I’ve had the same putter for fifteen years, so I know what it feels like in my hand, I know it’s weight and I know how all that plays into my putts.

Putting takes a lot of practice. Typically, we drive the ball eighteen times in a game, but putt at least double that number. So doesn’t it stand that we should practice our putting at least twice as much as driving? If you can’t get to the practice green regularly, just practice on your carpet at home.

But bear in mind that the ball will never make it to the hole, if it doesn’t have enough wallup behind it to get it in there. So, why not take the time to get down on the ground to look at the path your ball must run to the hole. Does it slope one way or the other? Does the path run uphill or downhill?

So, stand with your feet spread apart for balance and line up the putt. Keep you hands, arms and shoulders completely still. Imagine that you are a “bobble head” but that you move from just below your chest. Keep your head directly over the ball. Pull your club back; keep your hands, wrists, arms and shoulders steady – the movement comes from your chest. Hit the ball, following the ball through with your club.

Learn from each putt and remember the lesson. Practice, practice, practice!

The term 'the long game' is used to refer to the drives (shots off the tee) and fairway shots, which means every shot with the exception of the ones you make to actually get onto the green.

The term ‘the long game’ is used to refer to the drives (shots off the tee) and fairway shots, which means every shot with the exception of the ones you make to actually get onto the green.

Since each golf hole has a different difficulty level, different par and distinctive hazards, telling you to use your driver on every tee would blatantly be quite wrong.

But don’t worry about it. This is something that you will have to learn with experience as you learn the various types shot you need to make, which will vary according to the club, the placement of the ball and your own personal style of swing.

As a rule of thumb, the lower the number of the club, the longer and lower your ball will travel through the air. For example, a 4-iron will make the ball travel on a long and low trajectory and will most likely roll when it hits the ground, whereas a 9-iron will give the ball much more loft and it will go less distance both in the air and over the ground.

Don’t the professionals on the television make it look easy? They whack the ball long and straight time after time after time and never slice the ball sending it a sickly eight or nine feet or miss the ball altogether.

One of the most important parts of the game is the drive. If you spend a few hours at the driving range you will see quite a big improvement in your long-distance shots. Use the same club in this experiment to see what affect it has, if you move the ball backward or forward or in your stance. And, if you can, take a lesson or two from a pro, to learn the proper swing from the start.

You must master the long game as it will help you get to the green in much fewer strokes, which will keep your score and frustration levels down. Don’t forget that it takes a long time to be consistently consistent and always remember: you’re supposed to be enjoying yourself! So go and enjoy yourself.

The popularity of the game of golf has increased tremendously over the past forty-five years, giving us great champions like Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, and Tiger Woods and world-renowned courses like Pinehurst, St. Andrews, Augusta National and the Blue Monster at Doral.

Why should playing golf have taken off like that? I think it has to be because by playing golf you are being active outdoors with friends or colleagues competing in a leisurely game that you can never perfect.

Your scorecard shows your progress, or lack of it, and this can spur you on to want to play again.

Here follows an elementary lesson for those who know nothing about golf.

A round of golf is usually played on an eighteen hole course. Each hole has its ‘par’, which is the total number of tee shots (drives), fairway shots, chips (short shots near the ‘green’) and putts on the green, it should take to sink the golfball in the hole.

The par number is based on the length and difficulty of the hole. Pars range from 3 to 6. If you get the ball in the hole in five shots on a par five hole, you “made par.” If it took you six shots, its called a bogie, if you made it in four, its a birdie.

‘Hazards’ or obstructions are usually placed before all the holes. Ponds, sand bunkers and trees are positioned in such a way as to make it more difficult to reach the green. Novice golfers should try to find a course with fewer hazards, which is therefore easier to play.

Players mark their own scorecard with the cumalative total of shots taken for each hole. After playing all the holes, the players add up their own scorecards and the one with the lowest score is the winner.

Please don’t take your score or your lack of skill to heart when you are a beginner golfer, because, although the professionals make it look simple, it takes many years to play the game well.

It makes very good sense to take a few lessons from the course pro, when you are just beginning to learn to play golf, because then you will learn how to stand and swing the golf club correctly.

Golf lessons will cost you some extra money but when you understand the benefits of learning this very focused sport you will realize that it can be of the utmost importance.

Practice makes perfect may be true for most sports but to improve your golfing game learning the proper techniques is imperative. Golfing is by no means an easy sport as there are many areas you need to be skilled at and acquiring these skills will be a lot easier and faster if you get help from a professional.

While practice is important, during practice you may emulate other golfers who are not trained and this may cause you to pick up their bad habits. Once these habits have become ingrained they are very difficult and time consuming to break. One of the advantages of lessons is therefore learning the correct way of playing golf from the very beginning.

Training can also be a conventional way of getting an individual to practice their game in a setting where they can concentrate intensely and not be interrupted. Devoid of buddies to distract you your focus will increase and you will learn faster. This might not seem like a fun option but your skills will grow at a truly amazing speed. You are going to be watched constantly and possibly even belittled however; you are almost certainly assured of amazing results.

The primary objective of any golfer is to improve their swing, hit longer drives and shoot lower scores. Not only is this achievable through lessons but it will also be a whole lot quicker to see the improvement in all of these areas. Improving your game will also increase your enjoyment when playing whilst becoming the envy of all your golfing buddies is a bonus.

Understanding which golf clubs to make use of for the numerous holes is a further significant part of the overall game. Lessons will certainly demonstrate exactly how to achieve this and in doing so decrease your current golf score and that without a doubt, is a good situation. Pacing yourself is also one more important aspect associated with golf and an experienced trainer will certainly give you scope to increase your golfing speed thereby allowing you to keep up the pace of the game.

Like many other sports golfing etiquette is something you should learn about in order to keep from making a fool of yourself on the green. Once again, a coach will teach you all there is to know about the etiquette of the game. This is something every golfer should know and put into practice.

Golf lessons are therefore a smart choice for every golfer. If you are thinking about taking up golf, lessons are a way of learning and mastering the game in a shorter time period than you would without lessons. For the average golfer who spends weekends at the course, you may want to consider lessons if you are aiming for a better game. Either way you will not be disappointed. You friends will also be envious when they see the results making you the “go-to” guy.

Happy Golfing!

What to know about Galvin Green waterproof golf clothes comes down to understanding that this maker of golf clothing is one of the best in the business today. It is extremely well known throughout Europe and is a highly respected supplier of quality clothing for golfers of all abilities right up through the top pro ranks. The company also makes a wide variety of clothing lines.

If one takes the time to look at one of their waterproof clothing lines or any of their clothing items it will quickly become evident that the item is made of the highest quality material and fabrics and is constructed extremely well. Each item is designed to use its fabrics (such as Gore-Tex) to provide the golfer with a great deal of warmth and will keep him or her very dry on a wet day.

The waterproof line of golf clothing offered by Galvin also comes off as fashionable and chic in a way that had never been associated with waterproof golf clothing in the past. The philosophy of the company is to take a hard look at each piece of clothing and assess it for how it would work with another piece of clothing. This is known as layering, and each piece makes use of a variety of materials.

In addition to liberal use of the fantastic fabric Gore-Tex, the company also makes wide use of other fabrics such as Insula and Paclite, both of which are well-known in the industry for controlling the environment in which the clothing has found itself. Lately, it seems that almost any golfer needing protection from the elements is clamoring for a Galvin Green Akron waterproof jacket one’s own.

Truthfully, most golf clothing items from this company wouldn’t be considered inexpensive in any light, but most every golfer that has ever put on something like the Akron will become an instant and fanatic believer in the clothing. This is especially so with the Akron, because of its laminated and insulated fabric that makes great use of Gore-Tex. In fact, the Akron is always in short supply due to its popularity.

In the golf clothing market today, Galvin Green waterproof golf clothing is a trend setter and industry leader. The company has worked hard to offer clothing lines for men and women that can accommodate every shape and size, it seems. Additionally, even though these articles of clothing aren’t very inexpensive, one can be assured that they are of the highest quality and durability.

To buy from a great selection of galvin green golf clothing, including a new galvin green waterproof, go to our website at www.topdrawgolfclothing.com today

We've all the seen the incredibly long yet accurate drives of Tiger Woods. The ball flies through the air and lands in the middle of the fairway, 300 yards away.

We’ve all the seen the incredibly long yet accurate drives of Tiger Woods. The ball flies through the air and lands in the middle of the fairway, 300 yards away.

The green-eyed monster of envy rises in us as we wonder if we could ever possibly hope to drive like that. Fortunately, long drives are not the be-all-and-end-all of the game of golf.

So, we get to the ‘short game’ because without decent short game skills, all those great long drives are not worth a candle.

We call the ‘short game’ those shots that get you onto the green from roughly a hundred feet away from the hole, no matter whether it’s from the fairway, a bunker, the rough or a drop zone. It includes all chips, sand shots and pitches.

It is in this middle stage of the game of golf that you get to use the higher numbered clubs, your pitching iron and sand wedge or lob wedge.

You will find practice areas on most golf courses. You really must spend some time working on hitting the ball onto the green from various distances. Try to hit a ten-foot circle in the centre of the green at first. Experiment using your wedges, but remember that what works well for one person, might not work so well for you and your particular swing.

After you have got into the habit of being able to perform this skill consistently, it’s time to start practising in a sand bunker. Being able to get the ball out of a bunker can cut your score dramatically.

The way to get out of a bunker is to place your feet firmly in the sand with your left foot turned to point towards the hole. Draw an imaginary 4-inch circle around the ball and try to hit the outer edge of that circle with a short, sharp chip.

Take lots of sand with your ball and swing through completely. Don’t decelerate at all when or after you hit the ball. It should pop up onto the green and stop. This doesn’t work well though unless the sand is dry, soft and powdery. On hard surfaces, you might need to avoid actually hitting the sand at all.

However, as in every skill in the game of golf, it is only continual practice that will help you to improve your game.
