Golf Match Play Tutorial
Golf match play is one of the many different types of games that can be played on a golf course. Each hole is counted individually, so if you win a hole, it counts as a point for you. This type of golf match play can be played either one on one or in teams of two, depending on how many players are involved.
The points are calculated from one hole to the next so its a straight forward scoring process. If a tie is declared on one particular hole then no points are awarded and if the match is tied up, its known as all square.
You could well see a final score of 4 to 3 which would tell you that the game finished early because one player had a lead of four holes and there were only three holes left in the game. If this point is reached it is not possible for the other player to take over the lead and the game comes to an end.
When you partake in match play there are many things to be taken into account, most of which are part of golf basics.An example of this would be if you play your shot when its not your turn, your opponent can request that you take it again as a violation of the rules has taken place.
Also, if you happen to play a shot from outside of the tee box, the same thing can happen. In stroke play, this would be a 2 shot penalty, so playing match play does have its advantages when these issues arise. Breaching a rule is very detrimental and in stroke play, it usually calls for a 2 shot penalty.
In stroke play breaking the rules often results in a two point penalty being brought about. However, in match play the player would only lose that hole and he is given the chance to pick up the points again later in the game.
Match play also varies from stroke play as far as late comers are concerned.In stroke play if you are late for your tee-time you forfeit the tournament whereas in match play you are given until the second tee to start your game.
The strategy of match play golf is quite different to stroke play. For example, if the person you are playing against makes a bad tee-shot, you are afforded the luxury of playing a little more conservatively and taking advantage of the state of play.
Golf match play is exciting for those playing and learning as they go along. It is very competitive and reactions ranging from aggressiveness to passivity are regularly displayed, depending of course on the actions of your opponent.
