Golf Swing Lesson: Learn from the Pro’s and Develop Your Game

There are two principles that much be mastered by the student in any golf swing lesson, to achieve a great overall technique. These are balance and rhythm. To take your game up a couple of notches, these must become like second nature. Your consistency and confidence will grow dramatically when you have control of these two elements. Rhythm is the ability to repeat the same action again and again and with the same speed. The ability to maintain stability during each stage of the stroke, from the teeing up stage to completion, is what we mean by balance.

A useful tip is to watch professional players as much as possible, to see how they develop their own golf swing techniques. More often than not, they will go through a sequence of steps each time that will get them into the correct frame of mind for the shot. Balance and poise starts in the mind and picturing the perfect shot is an often used technique by sports psychologists. This can help the student to visualise the shot even before they approach the actual ‘set-up’ for the shot.

To master the correct technique for the golf swing, it is important not to make the mistake of over-swinging. To achieve a longer distance shot, it is sometimes believed that a longer arc of the club and a greater speed of follow through is necessary. This often results in a poor club/ ball connection due to the wrong position of the face of the club at impact. To achieve distance, it is the time that the ball is in contact with the club that is also very important, not just the speed of the club-head. The focus, initially, should be on not taking the club back more than you can rotate your shoulders. The goal of distance will come in time when these fundamentals are in place.

With a daily practice routine, it should be possible to achieve good results. This will also help train and strengthen your muscles for a wider stretch and improved control.
